The 123 Way
efficient, stressfree
& comprehensive

Mary is a freelance photographer living and working in London. She decided to go freelance in 2006 and started trading as a sole trader. Mary works for The Times, The Telegraph, Observer and many other house hold names.

After Mary had been successfully freelancing for three years she wanted to look at other ways in which she could increase her income. Up until this point Mary had not been registered for VAT as she had not quite crossed the threshold. Mary also wanted to set up an online business selling some of her journalism work to private clients. She had talked this over with several of her freelance photographer colleagues who wanted to know if it was possible for them to also sell their photographs through her website.

Mary's first step was to talk to her brother Phillip who was a director of a small print supply company that he had set up back in 2003.

"Phillip advised me straight away to see an account that specialised in advising freelance contractors such as me. Before now I'd been filling out my personal tax returns myself and getting by OK but he made me see that a specialist accountant could really open up different avenues to increase my income."

"I did a quick Google search and found 123 Contracting, gave them a call and someone picked up straight away - his name was Chris and he talked me through in plain English what some of my choices were. After 20 minutes I understood everything, clear as day, he was fantastic at explaining lots of things to me that I had not understood before."

"We decided to incorporate my business and formed a limited company straight away. This allowed me to continue freelancing as a photographer and gave me some great tax saving advantages on all the money I earned. It also gave my personal finances protection from being sued by anyone if anything went wrong with the new online business."

"Finally we decided to register me for the VAT Flat Rate Scheme. I had not understood this before, but Chris explained how it would increase my income by over £2,000 per year and meant no extra work for me."

It also compares the differences between freelance contracting through your own Limited Company, through an Umbrella Company, as a Sole Trader or if you were to return to full time employment.
