The difference between Contractors, Freelancers & Consultants

When it comes to distinguishing between contractors, freelancers and consultants there is not a great deal of difference. It has been said that a freelancer is someone who works for many clients at the same time from their own office, possibly their own home. Examples would be freelance journalists, writers or photographers.

In contrast contractors usually take on one contract at a time and when completed move onto the next. These contracts are often served at the offices of the client but can also be taken on from your own home office.

Consultant usually refers to anyone who is contracting or freelance and offers their opinion on a professional matter - they are often contractors who review plans and offer an informed opinion.

When it comes to taxes and accountancy there is very little difference between freelancers, contractors and consultants. All three usually work as Sole Traders or through their own Ltd company or an Umbrella Company. The three terms are used mainly due to tradition i.e. a freelance photographer or an engineering contractor or a financial consultant - in real terms there is little difference between the words, contractor, freelancer or consultant.
