SA302s and a mortgage application

Tuesday 13th May 2014

If you are thinking of applying for a mortgage shortly then you will need to provide a range of documents to support your application.

As a freelance contractor one of the documents that will be requested by your mortgage broker or bank is the SA302.

An SA302 is a one page statement from HMRC showing your personal income details for a particular tax year for example 6 April 2013 to 5 April 2014. You will need to request these directly from HMRC by calling 0300 200 3310.

Why do lenders like SA302s?

Simple, they come from a government agency - HMRC. Your personal tax return shows exactly the same data but you could have prepared this yourself so lenders ask for SA302s instead.

When should I request them?

As soon as possible - they may take two weeks or more to be posted to you so we urge you to request them from HMRC in plenty of time.
